the one nobody validates

no contact after a situationship

It counts. You do not need a title to be wrecked by someone, and no contact works the same way. The ambiguity usually makes it harder, not easier — there is no clean ending to point at, so nobody grants you permission to grieve it, including you.

There was no breakup. There was no title. There is nothing you can announce, so there is nothing anyone can console you about — and yet here you are at 1am, doing the same thing people do after a five-year relationship.

Let us deal with the first question directly, because it is the one blocking everything else.

yes, this counts

Attachment does not check whether you had a label. It forms from repetition and intermittency — someone who was there, then not, then there again. If anything that pattern binds harder than a stable relationship does, which is why you can be more wrecked by four months of ambiguity than by two years of something steady.

So when a friend says "but you were never actually together", they are describing the paperwork. They are not describing what happened to you.

the thing that makes it worse

In a real breakup, everyone agrees something ended, and that agreement is itself a kind of support. After a situationship you have to argue for your own grief before you are allowed to feel it. Most people give up and skip to pretending they are fine.

why the ambiguity keeps it alive

A breakup gives you a sentence: it is over. A situationship gives you a question: was it ever anything? And a question is exactly the shape of thing your mind will keep answering, over and over, at night.

This is rumination with unusually good fuel. There is no closing scene to replay, so instead you replay evidence — the week they were different, the thing they said in October, whether the last message meant what you thought. None of it resolves, because it was never resolvable.

It also means the door never visibly closes. Nobody said never. Which is why a situationship can hold someone for longer than a marriage did.

the specific traps

so what does no contact mean here

The same thing it means anywhere: an old pathway stops getting fed. Every day you do not check, do not reply, do not post for them, the loop that says "stay available and it might resolve" gets a little quieter.

The practical difference is that you usually have to be more literal about it, because there is no structure holding you apart. Nobody divided the furniture. There is no mutual friend enforcing distance. The only boundary that exists is the one you build.

about the reappearance

They probably will. Situationships end quietly and restart casually, and the restart usually arrives at a low-effort moment — late, brief, warm, requiring nothing of them.

It is worth knowing in advance that this will not feel like a test when it arrives. It will feel like relief. That is the moment the whole thing turns on, and it is much easier if you already decided, back when you were clear-headed, what you were going to do.

how long

Nobody can give you a number, and the timelines you find online are mostly written for relationships with an ending. What people describe more often is a shift than a finish line: at some point the question stops being interesting. You do not decide it meant nothing; you just stop needing to know.

Being honest about the app for a second, since this guide is on its site: matching puts people at a similar stage together, and "situationship" is one of the stages, precisely because the grief gets dismissed everywhere else. What it cannot do is tell you what you were to them. Nothing can, and chasing that answer is the thing keeping you in it.

if it's heavier than a breakup

If you're thinking about hurting yourself, please don't sit with it alone — call or text 988(US Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), or your local emergency number. We're peer support, not a crisis service, and this is the one thing we'd never want you to use us for.

the hard part isn't the counting.

It's 2am, and a number can't answer you. NO CONTACT CLUB puts 3–5 real people at your exact stage on the other end of one shared streak — so when the urge hits, you text them instead of your ex.
